How to Do a Double Cleanse to Clear Your Pores - Duo Cleansers

How to Do a Double Cleanse to Clear Your Pores

It’s time to take your cleansing routine to the next level—and really de-clog those pores. The most effective method? The double cleanse.

“The number one concern my clients have in summer is that their pores are clogged,” says New-York-City-based facialist Nachi Kanemaru Glick. The common culprits: sweat, sunscreen and makeup residue, all of which can create a dulling build-up on the skin. But this summer we have an added hurdle—cloth face masks, which are 100 percent necessary for our health, but also create specific complexion challenges. “With the state of the world, it’s advisable to wear face masks, but those same face masks will cause increased sweat,” Nachi says. If you don’t regularly clean your mask, “it’s likely that bacteria will be present on or underneath the mask.” For all these reasons, Nachi says, it’s time to take your cleansing routine to the next level—and really de-clog those pores.

The most effective method? The double cleanse, which involves two different but equally important phases of skin renewal. Here, Nachi takes us through the process.

What is a double cleanse? Why should we invest extra time in doing this ritual?
“Not everyone is clear on what double cleansing means! Some people think it’s just washing your face twice. Actually, double cleansing is the process of first ‘face cleansing’ —to remove unwanted oil, such as liquid foundation, sunscreen, and sebum—and then ‘face washing’—to remove water-based residue, such as debris and dead skin cells. Everyone can benefit from double cleansing, but it’s highly recommended for those who wear makeup or face masks, use sunblock, or have generally oily skin.”

Where did you learn your technique?
“I started double cleansing as a teenager in Japan. I used to go surfing all the time and would use quite a bit of sunblock lotion. When I returned home, I would clean off the sunblock lotion using an oil-based cleanser. Then I would take a bath to wash my body with soap and water. Obviously, my double cleansing method has matured since my teenage years! But the basics are to use both oil-based and water-soluble options to get a deep clean.”

Nachi’s Double Cleanse Method:

Step 1: Spread a few drops of Bia Wash Off Cleansing Oil between your dry hands and warm it by rubbing your hands together.

Step 2: Massage the cleansing oil over your entire face gently for one to two minutes.

Step 3: Rinse thoroughly with warm water.

Step 4: Apply a dime-size amount of the Bia Exfoliating Wash to your face while adding warm water to create an emulsion.

Step 5: Lightly massage your face to rid dead flakes, taking care not to rub or scrub your skin too firmly.

Step 6: Rinse thoroughly with warm water and pat your face dry with a clean towel.

What should you do post-cleansing?
“Immediately after your double cleansing, apply a moisturizer like Bia Day Cream to replenish the moisture of your skin.”

Any other special tips to keep skin healthy in summer?

“After taking a shower or bath I recommend that you pat down your face with a cotton pad or wash cloth soaked in ice cold water. In warm weather your pores will be more open and susceptible to bacteria and dirt. The cold will help tighten them and make you feel more refreshed.”
